“THANK YOU UGANDA, BYE CRANES”- Denis Oyango

Ugandan national team captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango announced his retirement from international football on Monday night after 16 years of donning the cranes jersey.

He wrote:

“I sit here with tears rolling down my eyes because after a lengthy consideration I have come to the decision of retiring from international football with immediate effect.

“It is a sad day in my life knowing that I will never wear the jersey of my beloved Cranes in front of passionate fans again. I will now become the number one supporter who wears the jersey watching from the stands or from home. It is through the Ugandan national team that I have grown from a boy into the man and father that I am now.

“For all the success that I have enjoyed in my career I owe so much of it to the national team. It was because of my national team that I got to play against all the best players from across the continent who play in top leagues all over the world. I played at the AFCON finals because of the Cranes. The joy of being at the AFCON finals after so many years was sweet. To sing my national anthem was the greatest joy that I will ever have being the ‘proud boy’ from Uganda that I am.

“I didn’t want to retire but I felt it is better to leave good memories and allow for the younger goalkeepers to compete for that jersey which I have worn with pride for 16 years. Everyone who has worked with me knows how much I enjoyed playing for the national team. My commitment and hard work were never in question. To everyone that I worked with especially coach Micho (Milutin Sredojevic) thank you for the patience, understanding and wisdom that you brought to me.

“To my friends, management of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, Nsambya FC and SC Villa, teammates, managers, coaches, I say thank you. My biggest appreciation is to the fans and all the people of Uganda. I love you all. Football can never be as beautiful as it is without fans. Nothing can ever be better than captaining your national team. It was real. Salute to every Ugandan.”

Zimbabwe or England? Should REISS NELSON consider Africa ?

Arsenal football club star Reiss Nelson who was born in Elephant and Cast , London to a Zimbabwean father and English mother has been tipped to switch his international allegiance to Zimbabwe by multiple fans including fellow players like Wigan Athletic fc defender Tendayi Darikwa who also switched from England to Zimbabwe

Earlier this year, the Zimbabwean FA said they have opened their doors for all the European born players with Zimbabwean origins to join the Africa cup bound warriors.

Zimbabwe who qualified to next year’s Cameroon Africa cup of nations are looking to go beyond the group stages at the tournament for the first time.

The 21-year old has struggled for game time as he only made less than five premier league appearances last season for the gunners and stands a slim chance in the three lions squad.

He represented England at all youth levels from U16 to U21 which makes him eligible to play for the warriors of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweans have remained hopeful that he will switch his international allegiance soon before next year’s Afcon kick off in order to boost their squad that has struggled to make it through to the quater finals in the past two edition of the cup of nations.

FOOTBALLERS WHOSE INTERNATIONAL CAREERS ARE IN LIMBO AFTER SNUBBING AFRICA

IS IT A COINCIDENCE ?

Here are some of the players of African origin that were either neglected and/or flopped after turning down call ups from African countries.

▪️KARIM BENZIMA 🇩🇿
In 2006, prior to his senior debut for France, he was approached by representatives from the Algerian football association (FAF) who sought to persuade him to play for their country but he declined the invitation, telling RMC: “Algeria is my parents’ country and it is in my heart, but I will play for the France national team.”

Karim Benzima

Interestingly, following Benzema’s comments in November 2019, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi simply replied: “I’m very happy with the players I have.”

However, few years later , Benzima was dumped by France after his alleged sex tape went viral. Since today, the player who is arguably one of the best players in the world has not played international football. He has made several attempts to switch to Algeria but it’s too late due to FIFA eligibility rules.

▪️ADAMA TRAORÉ 🇲🇱
The wolves rapid forward was approached by the Malian FA with an attempt to lure him to play for Mali but he turned down the call up and chose his country of birth Spain.

Adama Troare

Months later, Traoré suffered with injuries and has not scored a goal this season in the English premier league and made only one assist.

During the previous international break, Traore was left out in the Spanish national team squad because of his poor form in the Premier league.

Adama’s international career now remains in question marks as the hype has suddenly vanished in thin air and Spain slowly forgetting him.

▪️CHARLY MUSONDA JR🇿🇲
One of the most exciting kids that came on the scene with so much hype in the English premier league and kept the media talking. Charly was born from both Zambian parents in belguim.

Charly Musonda Jr

The Zambian FA approached him to represent the chipolopolo boys but he openly refused and said “Zambia is my father’s country. I am Belgian”.

However, a few years later Charly was knocked out on the pitch with an injury and it has been injury after another injury , a thing that till today has threatened his career. Some doctors even told him he might never play again though he is now improving.

Charly has not been called up to the belgian national team and as it stands, he might never be called due to the competition in the world’s number one ranked national team, Belgium .

He is recovering and has been dropped to the Chelsea u23 hoping to make a come back to the elite premier league.

▪️MARIO BALOTELI 🇬🇭
An amazing player he is. One of the most fantastic players that might have gone all the way to even win the Ballon d’Or. Baloteli was born from Ghanian parents and was called up to the Ghana national team when he was only 17years old.

Mario Baloteli

Baloteli refused and opted to play for Italy which he represented well.

However, few years later baloteli started complaining of being racially abused by both Italian fans , coaches and fellow players. He was later dumped by Italy and now he plays in the second tier in Italy.

Baloteli has openly regretted not playing for Ghana saying that perhaps they would have appreciated him unlike Italy that has been ungrateful to him.

▪️Gabriel Ogborlorhor 🇳🇬
After a successful season at Aston Villa in the English premier league the Nigerian FA sent representatives to woo him to play for the super eagles but he plainly told them he was not interested and that he preferred England.

Gabriel Ogborlorhor

His decision to dump Nigeria in preference for England backfired within a shortest period of time.

The English discarded him from their national team after just two appearances and since then he never featured for England again and has nothing to write home about his international football career.

The football association of Zambia-FAZ said it will invite some European born players with Zambian origin to the Zambia national soccer team squad before the world cup qualifiers start this June. He said they will only invite european born players who are willing to play for Zambia.

The Chipolopolo will miss out on next year’s Cameroon african cup of nations after failing to qualify to the tournament for the third consecutive time.

They have since shifted their attention to the world cup qualifiers where they are drawn in Group B with, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea and Mauritania.

The recent poor performance by the Chipolopolo has since triggered fans to suggest that the FA casts their net wide by inviting some of the European born players to boost their squad.

Some of the players that have been making rounds on the Zambian social media platforms including English born defender Frankie Chisenga Musonda who plays in the Scottish Championship with Raith rovers fc.

The defender has scored three goals this season and named in the Scottish Championship team of the week , three times, a thing that has made many Zambian fans shower him with accolades and call on their FA to invite him.
