After sending them hearty best wish message before they played Tunisia on Wednesday, Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema has once again expressed excitement with what the Zambia womens national soccer team have so far achieved at the ongoing 2022 Morocco womens Africa cup of nations.

The girls who are without some of their star players which include Olympic record breaker Barbara Banda were urged by President Hichilema to take the WAFCON seriously as it presents an opportunity to qualify to the next edition of the FIFA Womens World Cup next year.

President Hichilema wrote on his official Facebook page on Tuesday;

In his latest posting , the President has expressed excitement that the copper queens have qualified to the Quater finals , a feat they have achieved for the first time in their history after previously only finishing in the group stages at the three WAFCON editions.

President Hichilema wrote

Zambia defeated Tunisia 1-0 through an Avell Chitundu tap in goal from a Grace Chanda Assist on Wednesday to secure their first ever Quaterfinal appearance at the WAFCON with a game to spare.

The copper queens will wrap up their group stage campaign against Togo on Saturday as they will aim at finishing top of Group B ahead of Cameroon , Tunisia and Togo.

They are also targeting a maiden FIFA womens World Cup qualification by reaching the semifinals of the 2022 WAFCON which has been set as the qualification mode for African representatives at the next edition of the global womens football showpiece to be cohosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to take place from 20 July to 20 August 2023. The 2023 tournament will see the Women’s World Cup expanded from 24 to 32 teams.
