10 Records Barbra Banda Has Broken, Set And Equalled At The Olympics

21 year old Zambian striker Barbra Banda has hit the ground running for her country in their maiden Olympics appearance. An underwelming team effort has not stopped the Shangai Shengli forward from firing the back of the net at an unprecedented rate.

She has netted 6 goals in only 2 outings those being a pair of hat tricks in a 10-3 defeat to Nerthelands on Wednesday and in a eight goal stalemate against China on Saturday.

The Shepolopolo captain has set multiple records at the Olympics tournament already. We take a look at ten of those women’s records.

1. MOST GOALS IN A SINGLE OLYMPICS TOURNAMENT
With her 6th goal she equalled a record set by Canadian striker Christine Sinclair during the 2012 Olympics. A record she eventually also shares with fellow Golden Boot contender Mediema.

2. BACK-TO-BACK HAT TRICKS
Barbra Banda became the first woman to score two consecutive hat tricks in Olympics history.

3. AFRICAN RECORD TOPSCORER
Her second goal against China beat Mercy Akide’s all time record of four Olympics goals by an African woman as the Zambian now comfortably stands at six.

4. MOST HAT TRICKS
Her pair of trebles put her up there with Brazilian legend Cristiane as the only players to score multiple hat tricks in the tournament’s history. With the Brazilian having scored them in two different editions.

5. AFRICA TO THE WORLD
Be it the World Cup or Olympics, the industrious forward has now scored the most goals [6] in a FIFA organised tournament by an African woman beating the two [2] goals scored by Mercy Akide in both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and the three [3] goals scored by Nkiru Okasieme and Gaëlle Enganamouit in the 1999 and 2015 World Cups respectively.

6. DOUBLE TROUBLE
The talismanic forward is also the only player in the tournament’s history to score two hat tricks in a single campaign.

7. NATIONAL HERO
Barbra Banda became the first Zambian player to score a goal at the Olympics. A goal her home country will never forget.

8. YOUNGEST TO SIX
At 21 years, 126 days, the forward became to youngest player to score more than five goals beating the record of World Cup great Marta who netted her sixth Olympic goal against Germany in 2008 at 22 years, 212 days.

9. FIRST AFRICA TREBLE
Despite an embarrassing defeat to Nerthelands, her three goal effort was the first ever by an African woman in the Olympics.

10. CONSOLATION
Barbra Banda also equalled the record of the most goals scored by a player in a lost match which was held by Christine Sinclair against the USA in 2012.

A plethora of records for the African great Barbra Banda as she continues to hoist the continent’s flag and create her own legacy as one the greatest African players in women’s football.

However, the hopes of her country and Africa’s only representative Zambia hang on a thread as they need to beat an in-form Brazil by a huge score line to stand any chance of progressing to the knockouts.
